M15: A look toward the future

Engelska Kommentering avstängd
Untimely and unexpected. That's what the emergence of this movement of collective outrage at the Spanish state was. If we had been told on M14 (May 14th, 2011) the next day thousands of people would start taking to the streets week by week and occupy squares, organized meetings, challenge the power with massive civil disobedience while staying in the streets... we would never have imagined it possible. But that's what happened. People, two and a half years after the outbreak of the "great crisis," said "Enough." - IV448 - May 2012 / ,

Systems of food production and consumption have always been socially organized, but their organization has varied historically. In the last few decades, under the impact of neoliberal politics, the logic of capitalism has been imposed upon the ways in which food is produced and consumed (Bello, 2009). [2] - Features / , ,

The defence of the earth, the ecosystem and biodiversity is one of the most important topics on the agenda of the social movements in Latin America today and that is precisely what is at stake in the United Nations Summit on Sustainable Development Rio +20, which will take place in June 2012 in Rio de Janeiro. The thematic Social Forum 'capitalist crises, environmental and social justice', which concluded on Sunday 29 January in Porto Alegre (Brazil), served to establish the basis for mobilisation for this key date. - IV445 - February 2012 / , ,

How to change the world?

Engelska Kommentering avstängd
How do we change the world? This is the question asked by thousands of people intent on changing things, the question that is often repeated in alternative social gatherings ... a question that the French philosopher Daniel Bensaïd said has no answer: "Make no mistake, no one knows how to change the world." We do not have an instruction manual but we do have some hints on how to do it and some working hypotheses. - IV444 - January 2012 /

"A woman, desperate to get the best offers in the Wal-Mart sale, discharged pepper-spray at people in order to drive them away from the items she wanted.” This could be a scene from a Pedro Almodovar film had it not been seen in real life. On the 25/11/2011 such a story appeared in the Los Angeles Times. - IV444 - January 2012 / , ,

The food crisis strikes again

Engelska Kommentering avstängd
The threat of a new food crisis is already a reality. The price of food began to rise to record levels again, according to the FAO Food Price Index of February, 2011, which does a monthly analysis of global prices of a basic food basket made up of grains, seed oils, dairy products, meat and sugar. The Index came to a new historic maximum, the highest since the FAO began to study food prices in 1990. In the past months, prices have leveled off but analysts predict more hikes in the coming months. - IV441 - October 2011 / ,

Women of Corn

Engelska Kommentering avstängd
In the countries of the Global South, women are the principal producers of food, those in charge of working the land, safegaurding the seeds, gathering the fruit, obtaining water. Between 60 to 80% of food production in these countries is down to women, and worldwide at a level of 50%. These women are the main producers of the staple crops, such as rice, wheat and maize, which go to feed the most impoverished populations of the South. But despite their key role in agriculture and provision of food, they are, together with children, the most affected by hunger. - IV440 - September 2011 / , ,

Famine: Less land, more hunger

Engelska Kommentering avstängd
The tragedy of hunger again becomes current news from the food emergency in the Horn of Africa, but famines are a silent daily reality. Worldwide, more than a billion people, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), have difficulties accessing food. A famine with political causes and responsibility. - IV439 - August 2011 / , , ,

The whys of hunger

Engelska Kommentering avstängd
We live in a world of plenty. Today food is produced for 12,000 million people, according to the Organization of the United Nations Food and Agriculture (FAO), when the planet is inhabited by 7,000 people. There is food. So why is one of every seven people in the world going hungry? The food emergency that affects over 10 million people in the Horn of Africa brings to light a disaster that has nothing natural about it. Droughts, floods, wars … serve to exacerbate a situation of extreme food vulnerability, but they are not the only factors that explain it. - IV439 - August 2011 / , ,
